Why stick to the ordinary when there are countless unique possibilities with abandoned structures? With the right renovations, anything can become a home. As a designer, I've always dreamed of creating an unconventional and surprising home conversion that would shock the entire city. Why not embrace quirkiness, stand out, and challenge yourself with an unusual conversion? Here are my top four dream conversions.

#1 The Church Conversion

This has to be my number one dream: a church conversion. The very idea of transforming a historical church into a unique living space makes my imagination run wild. There's something profoundly magical about high ceilings that soar above, creating an atmosphere of openness and grandeur. These elevated spaces not only provide a sense of freedom but also allow abundant natural light to flood in, illuminating every corner of the room.

The history embedded within the walls of a church is rich and layered. Each crack and crevice tells a story, echoing the prayers and gatherings that have taken place over the years. Imagine walking through a space that has witnessed countless moments of joy, reflection, and community. The very beauty of the past can be felt in the air, creating a connection to something much larger than ourselves.

One of the most striking features of a church conversion is undoubtedly the stained glass windows. When sunlight filters through the glass, it casts vibrant patterns on the floor, transforming the space into a kaleidoscope of hues.

The potential for creativity in a church conversion is endless. The expansive layout allows for innovative design possibilities, from open-concept living areas to cozy nooks for reading and relaxation. Each room can be transformed to reflect personal style while preserving the character of the original structure. Imagine a spacious kitchen where friends gather to cook and share meals, or a serene bedroom that offers a peaceful retreat from the outside world.

#2 The Firehall Conversion

The old Firehall stands as an example of industrial design, embracing a sense of history and functionality that is often hard to find in modern construction. Its old brick façade and large, arched windows speak to a time when buildings were designed not just for aesthetics but for durability and purpose.

The original fire pole, a charming historic element, is being integrated into the design as a focal point, serving as a reminder of its original purpose while also adding character to the new layout.

An old Firehall is more than just a building; it is a canvas for creativity and a testament to the area's industrial heritage. I think there is nothing more beautiful than that.

#3 The Barn Conversion

The old Barn Conversion is undoubtedly one of my favourites! This unique transformation of a traditional rustic structure into a cozy living space offers a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. The tall ceilings create an airy, open atmosphere, allowing natural light to flood the room and enhancing its spaciousness, making it feel even more inviting. The use of reclaimed wood throughout the space not only adds character but also tells a story of its own, as each piece carries the history of its previous life.

The spacious living area is perfect for both relaxation and social gatherings, making it an ideal spot for family and friends to come together. With its open floor plan, the layout encourages a seamless flow between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. This openness is perfect for entertaining, allowing conversations to flow freely while meals are being prepared. The rustic elements, such as exposed beams and weathered wood accents, create a warm and inviting ambiance that makes everyone feel at home.

#4 The Water Tower Conversion

The idea of converting a water tower into a livable space is perhaps one of the most unique and innovative concepts. The very beauty of a water tower, characterized by its distinctive rounded shape, presents a variety of design challenges that can inspire creativity. These structures, often found in urban and rural landscapes alike, have a rich history and a striking presence that can be transformed into something truly extraordinary.

One of the primary challenges posed by a water tower's rounded shape is optimizing interior space. Traditional rectangular rooms may not fit well within the tower's circular confines, necessitating innovative approaches to layout and design. This could involve creating multi-level living areas that leverage the tower's height, allowing for an open, airy atmosphere while maintaining functionality. The unique curvature of the walls can also inspire custom furniture designs that complement the space, making every corner both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Given the unique challenges and opportunities of a water tower conversion, this project has the potential to be an award-winning challenge I would be up for.
