Why Oak & Ivory
Colour Is the
Hardest Part
Paint chips are tiny, surrounded by competing colours, and lit by fluorescent store lighting. None of that reflects what a colour will actually look like on your walls at 7am on a cloudy Kelowna morning or at 6pm when the Okanagan sun comes through your west-facing windows.
Danielle brings large-format colour boards, assesses your specific light conditions and fixed finishes, and selects a palette that works as a complete system — not just individual colours that looked good in isolation. The result is a home that feels cohesive, intentional, and genuinely yours.

Colour Consulting in Kelowna
Why Colour Selection Is Harder
Than It Looks
Every year, Kelowna homeowners spend thousands of dollars repainting rooms they got wrong the first time. The colour looked perfect on the chip. It looked fine on the sample board at the store. But on the wall, under their specific light, next to their specific flooring and cabinetry, it pulled green when they wanted warm, or looked grey when they wanted beige.
This is not a failure of taste. It is a failure of process. Colour selection is a technical skill that requires understanding undertones, light temperature, reflectance values, and how colours interact with fixed finishes. It is also deeply contextual — a colour that works beautifully in a south-facing Kelowna living room with Okanagan afternoon light may look completely different in a north-facing bedroom in West Kelowna.
At Oak and Ivory, Danielle approaches colour the same way she approaches every design decision: with a thorough understanding of your specific space before a single recommendation is made. She brings large-format colour boards rather than tiny paint chips, assesses your light at multiple times of day, and selects a palette that works as a complete system — walls, trim, ceilings, and accents — rather than individual colours chosen in isolation.
For homeowners who are not yet ready for an in-person consultation, our digital guides offer a starting point. The Okanagan Colour Palette Guide was developed specifically for homes in the Okanagan Valley, where the quality and angle of natural light is unlike anywhere else in Canada. It is a practical resource that helps you understand undertones, avoid the most common mistakes, and narrow down your choices before you ever pick up a paint brush.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Colour Consulting FAQs
Can't find what you're looking for? Reach out directly, we're happy to help.
How much does a colour consultation cost in Kelowna?
In-home colour consultations in Kelowna typically range from $250 to $400 depending on the scope and number of rooms. At Oak and Ivory, we price by project rather than by the hour so you know exactly what you are paying before we start. We also offer digital colour guides starting at CA $40 for homeowners who want expert guidance without the in-person visit.
What is the difference between a colour consultant and just picking paint at the store?
Paint chips at the store are tiny, surrounded by other colours, and lit by fluorescent light — three factors that make it nearly impossible to accurately predict how a colour will look on your walls. A certified colour consultant brings large-format colour boards, assesses your specific light conditions and fixed finishes, and selects colours that work together as a system. The result is a cohesive palette you will love for years, not a colour you second-guess the moment it goes on the wall.
When should I book a colour consultation — before or after I choose my finishes?
Always after your finishes are selected. Paint colour should be the last decision you make in a renovation, not the first. Your flooring, tile, countertops, and cabinetry all have undertones that will either work with or fight against your paint colour. Choosing paint before those selections are locked in is one of the most common and expensive mistakes homeowners make.
Do you work with Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams?
Yes. Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams carry the most reliable and extensive colour ranges available in Canada. We specify from both brands depending on which colours are the right fit for your space. We do not recommend colour-matching budget paint brands — the formula and coverage are never the same, and the results are consistently disappointing.
Can I get a colour consultation without a full interior design project?
Absolutely. Colour consulting is available as a standalone service. You do not need to be planning a renovation to book. Many of our clients come to us simply because they are repainting and want to get it right the first time. We also offer digital colour guides in our shop for homeowners who want expert direction they can work through on their own schedule.
Do you offer virtual or online colour consultations?
We prefer in-person consultations because lighting conditions are so critical to accurate colour selection. That said, we do offer digital resources — including our Okanagan Colour Palette Guide — for clients who are not ready for an in-person visit or who are in early planning stages. For new builds and renovations outside Kelowna, we can discuss a virtual option on a case-by-case basis.
